Overall, putting the politics around the game aside, game is a 6/10.Atomic Heart is a strange game with a fittingly strange and complex story. Of what I have played and seen, the character never really feels strong, while the combat is not in-depth enough to where being on the back-foot in combat is fun. Though at EYE seemed self-aware of this fact and ended up going for making the gameplay system have no real top end, allowing for insane and godly builds that I feel have not been matched by any game to date.

A game with some genuine creativity behind it, but suffering from a team which lacked the ability to compromise on their ideas for the sake of a better product. After playing for bit, reminds me a lot of EYE: Divine Cybermancy. Some of trailers made the game look like a boomer-shooter competitor with fast action, while other seemed to focus on bio-shock like elements and lean into the art-house Soviet weirdness. I won't get into the politics of it which is complicated.īut overall you can be impressed with what they accomplished while thinking it's a bad game. Going to the skill tree requires backing out. You have to back out of the crafting menu every time you make something. So terrible it's likely a random Reddit user could have done a better job. It's seriously the 2023 equivalent of Resident Evil 1 dialogue. Story is well below average.Įnglish voice acting is CATASTROPHICALLY terrible. Level design is adequate to below average.

Then you get to the squishier stuff that matters way more than people realize.

You've got crafting, a bunch of skill trees, powers guns.Īnd all of that is surprisingly well done. And there's an impressive amount of systems that are reasonably well implemented. I think it's fair to actually be pretty impressed with this as a first project on a technical level.
